Youth Taking Flight

Blue Lapis Light’s Youth Taking Flight program lets Austin’s youth experience the thrill of aerial dance!

Blue Lapis Light collaborates with teens from local social service organizations (such as LifeWorks) to create original dance performances. These performances are the culmination of twice-weekly semester long classes. Through a multi-media journey from the ordinary to the extraordinary, performers explore their lives in words, music, movement and aerial dance.

YTF’s last performance, “Remake Home” was performed on December 3rd & 4th, 2013 at the Boyd Vance Theatre in Austin. You can read Broadwayworld.com’s review of the show here. YTF’s next production will take place in May of 2014.

“Remake Home” was generously funded by The Creative Fund’s Q Rental Subsidy Grant program. The Creative Fund is a funding mechanism that provides much needed support to emerging artists enabling them to further their creative endeavors.

Special thanks to Band Aid School of Music for ensuring YTF rocks with the help of their donated guitar lessons. Also a big thanks to Magnolia CafeCentral Market and Whole Foods for helping us feed our students healthy snacks and meals during our evening classes, rehearsals and performances.

Youth Taking Flight History

McCallum Fine Arts Academy Youth Taking Flight students perform “Elevate,” September 30th, 2011

In 2008 Blue Lapis Light developed a partnership with McCallum Fine Arts Academy inaugurating Youth Taking Flight, a site-specific aerial dance program. Company members instructed high school students in the art of aerial techniques, culminating in multiple site specific performances.

Conducted by Artistic Director Sally Jacques and dancers of Blue Lapis Light, these semester-long classes introduce students to climbing aerial fabric, working with harnesses and bungees, and dancing in nets and hoops. Experiencing the joy and excited by its challenges, students learn to use equipment and gain insight into the imperative of safety and the benefits of developing of strength and awareness.

Instilling confidence and self-esteem through movement, Youth Taking Flight targets teenagers: they are excited by the concept, stimulated by the broad flight through space and once enamored, they are open to new paths of listening and learning.

In 2012, Blue Lapis Light collaborated with LifeWorks youth to create two original works, Awakening (performed at the Rollins Theatre) and Life Is Extraordinary (performed at the One World Theatre).
