#1 on the Top 9 Lasting Impressions in Dance From 2009 - "Four stories up, seemingly lit by phosphorescence against the infinity of night, harnessed dancers floated through perpendicular somersaults like rotating stars. Spectacle, yes, but the pinnacle of spectacle: the creation of an engrossing otherworld."

#6 on the Top 9 Dance and Classical Music Treasures of 2009 - "In sending more aerial dancers skyward than ever before and having more of them partner together, choreographer Sally Jacques created new wonders in the heavens, airborne duets that intertwined mortality and infinity."

Sally Jacques is featured in the recently released book Site Dance: Choreographers and the Lure of Alternative Spaces

COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMS

Blue Lapis Light offers aerial dance classes to students of all ages, introducing them to an exciting and challenging art form. The company works with multiple apparatuses, specializing in harness acrobatics and aerial silks. Company members draw from many movement styles-- from ballet to modern, pilates to jazz, yoga to improvisation, offering dynamic aerial classes that explore the body in space and its motion through the air.

Aerial classes encourage students to explore new movement vocabulary while developing strength, agility, and self-esteem. Intensive workshops aim to create original aerial compositions in collaboration with students. These dances are often presented to the community, providing performance opportunities and a chance for students to experience the technical aspects of a professional production. The innovative program Youth Taking Flight works with the McCallum High School for the Performing Arts in a three year partnership. This program emphasizes safety and equipment precautions, opening students to new paths of learning as they explore dancing through the air. Blue Lapis Light has worked in residency at the Sam Houston State University, and currently teaches workshops to Drill Teams, Troubled Youth, and various classes for children and adults at community centers.

Ongoing Aerial Classes are held at the Blue Lapis Light studio where students can learn this unique art form in a safe and fun environment. Our aerial curriculum includes instruction for beginners, intermediate and advanced students. Blue Lapis Light classes and workshops offer an inspired approach to spacial awareness, uplifting students and providing the community with the thrill of aerial dance..
